Recycle Ann Arbor Announces Free Shredding Event
October 6, 2008
Recycle Ann Arbor, a national leader in recycling and waste
programs, announces that the Drop-Off Station will hold a free
paper shredding event on Friday, October 17 and Saturday, October
18 from 9:30am - 4:30pm each day. The event is open to all
residents and businesses in Washtenaw County.
Customers may bring up to 100 pounds of paper for shredding to
the Drop-Off Station at 2950 East Ellsworth, just west of Platt
Road. All shredded paper will be recycled. Customers with more than
100 pounds of paper to be shredded must make arrangements before
the event by calling the Drop-Off Station at 734.971.7400. One
hundred pounds of paper is approximately four standard banker’s
boxes, or one 96-gallon trash can.
“Secure document shredding has been the most requested service
in the past two years,“ said Recycle Ann Arbor CEO Melinda Uerling.
“Recycle Ann Arbor is pleased to offer this free secure shredding
event to our customers, with the help of our partner, NPR
Recycling. We hope to offer more shredding events in the future,
especially to coincide with tax time.”
The high demand for secure document shredding directly
correlates to the increase in identity theft crimes. In 2005 alone,
more than eight million Americans were victims of identity theft.
According to the Federal Trade Commission (
www.ftc.gov), document shredding
is one of the easiest and most effective ways to help prevent
identity theft.
The Drop-Off Station is the state’s largest community recycling
drop-off center. It is open to the public Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-5
p.m., and is located at 2950 East Ellsworth Road in Ann Arbor, just
west of Platt Road.
Many recyclable items are accepted for free, such as paper,
metals, glass, batteries and many electronics. In addition, a wide
variety of items is accepted for disposal at minimal cost. All
accepted items and fees are listed on the Drop-Off Station page at
www.recycleannarbor.org.
Pick-up service is available for large bulky waste items, at
additional charge. Dump trailers are available to rent.
