presenter: Mary Morgan, Journalist and Publisher of The Ann Arbor Chronicle

program: Not for the Faint of Heart: Journalism in the 21st Century

With large news institutions struggling to survive, what kind of insanity does it take to start a local news venture and believe it can succeed? Mary Morgan and David Askins did just that last year, months before the Ann Arbor News announced plans to close. What were they thinking then - and what are they thinking now, after the local media landscape has changed so dramatically? We'll give you a behind-the-scenes look at the Ann Arbor Chronicle, an online news publication that's one of the newest players in the local media mix.

program: "Social Media: Should you or shouldn't you?"

Everyone is talking about the marketing potential of social media like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter. It's easy to feel behind the times if you don't use these media to promote your business. But your time—and your marketing budget—are limited. Should you be spending time and money on social media, or should you put your resources elsewhere? This talk will help you find the answer.

10 Minute "Power Mingle"
By networking, you expand your base of people who can provide you with services you need, people who might be your next customers or even a new business partner. NetWorks! is a monthly event that combines an informative speaker with structured networking and alternates between breakfast and lunch, with time allotted for full audience introductions and the popular “Power Mingle.” Tom Denk, NetWorks! Committee Chair, invented the 10 Minute Power Mingle. At the start of NetWorks! every attendee gives a 10 word introduction to the entire audience. While introductions are fresh in everyone’s mind, the group has 10 minutes to approach the people that most intrigued them. We call it a “Power Mingle" because these minutes are for one purpose – to move quick, meet people and exchange information and contacts. With a room of 75 to 150 people, networking is easy for even the quietest people to mingle.
