Looking Ahead to a Good Year After Atlanta Show
Thursday, January 28
The Ideation staff has returned from another successful member meeting at AmericasMart Atlanta during the International Gift & Home Furnishings Market. Attendance by Ideation members was up from 2009 and the mood was upbeat and optimistic for the year ahead.
The annual Ideation meeting was trimmed and modified from past shows and the smaller space worked very well. There was less product on display and less time spent formally presenting all the new merchandise. This allowed members to place orders more easily and at their own pace on the 24 laptops provided at the meeting by Ideation.
The new format also offered members time to socialize and exchange ideas and concerns with their peers. "We found from past meetings that our members really like the family friendly atmosphere of our meetings so we made a point to include more opportunity for them to talk among themselves", Ideation President Tom Ungrodt said. "They're all store owners trying to accomplish the same thing...grow a successful gift business...so there's a lot they can give and take from one another."
In addition, Mr. Ungrodt revealed the newly designed Spring Gift Catalog and Tab for the members in attendance. The contemporary design of both publications is contained in a narrower, streamlined size that features larger images on brightly colored backgrounds. "It's a bolder statement, and it's very different from what we've produced in the past but it's a step forward for us and our members," Tom said.
Approving members were excited by the new look and the fresh selection of spring merchandise.
Celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2010, Ideation provides catalog, website, marketing services and loyalty programs to independent retailers nationwide with a current membership of more than 400 stores. In addition to his executive role at Ideation, Mr. Ungrodt is a store owner himself with three retail gift locations in Michigan.
To see more go to www.ideationgifts.com or view and shop the catalog at www.paradeofgifts.com. For more information contact Tom Ungrodt or Tim Shannon at 800-521-3088.

AATA Board Reviews Countywide Transportation Survey Results
Thursday, January 21
The Ann Arbor Transportation Authority (AATA) Board of Directors has received the results of a recent telephone survey of Washtenaw County voters.
The survey was conducted jointly by Ohio-based companies CJI Research and Triad Research Group. Researchers polled 1,100 Washtenaw County registered voters between October 5 and October 15, 2009. The margin of error for the survey results is +/- 3 percent. The survey tested county voters’ attitudes toward the AATA and public transportation in general, as well as support for a possible future millage to fund countywide transportation services.
The survey found that nearly three-fourths of Washtenaw County voters (72 percent) said it is either “extremely” or “very important” to provide public transit services in Washtenaw County. This compares to 19 percent of voters who said public transit services are “somewhat important” and seven percent who said they are “not very important.” Another two percent of voters were unsure.
“Public transportation plays a critical role in helping residents get to and from where they live, work and play, and is increasingly important to the economic development of a region,” said AATA CEO Michael Ford. “I consider it a positive sign that the majority of respondents in this survey hold public transportation in such high regard.”
On the issue of public funding for countywide transportation, the survey asked voters two questions to gauge their support for a one-mil county transportation millage. First, voters were asked about their support for the idea before learning any arguments for or against a millage. Then, voters were given arguments both for and against a countywide transportation millage and asked again about their likelihood to support.
Without learning any details about a possible transportation millage, 51 percent of voters said they would either “probably” or “definitely” support a countywide transportation millage, compared to 41 percent who would “definitely” or “probably” vote no. After hearing arguments both for and against a millage, support increased to 58 percent while 37 percent said they would still vote no.
“The AATA Board of Directors recently adopted a vision to provide public transportation services throughout Washtenaw County,” said Ford. “The first step to reaching that vision will be the development of a countywide service plan, for which we’ll be seeking residents’ input. These results will act as a benchmark from which we can measure our efforts to engage the Washtenaw County residents in an open discussion about our region’s future transportation needs.”
The survey also found that 83 percent of respondents who expressed an opinion gave the AATA a positive job rating, compared to 15 percent who rated the AATA’s performance as “only fair” and only one percent who said the AATA was doing a “poor” job at providing public transportation services. The 28 percent of respondents who didn’t express an opinion were primarily those who live outside of the current AATA service area.
“Our staff works extremely hard to provide the best services possible. Last year alone, we provided more than 6 million trips to people going to work, school or just running errands,” said Ford. “So we’re encouraged to see such positive feedback on the job we’re doing.”
The latest information on AATA routes, schedules and detours is available at 734.996.0400 and on the AATA Routes and Schedules page.
The Ann Arbor Transportation Authority was chartered in 1969 by the City of Ann Arbor, Michigan, as a special-purpose unit of government. AATA is supported through local, state and federal funds, and fare box revenues. AATA operates 27 public transit routes, paratransit services and carpool-vanpool matching and other transportation services to facilitate mobility throughout the urbanized areas of Washtenaw County.
Michigan Theater Adds Screening to Coincide with Closing Night of the Sundance Film Festival
Wednesday, January 20
Due to the overwhelming demand for tickets to the premiere screening of CYRUS, the Michigan Theater announced that it will screen BILAL’S STAND, another Official Selection at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, on Sunday, January 31 at 6:00 pm. The screening of CYRUS, part of a groundbreaking initiative called Sundance Film Festival USA, is sold out.
"We are delighted to present BILAL'S STAND," said Michigan Theater Executive Director Russ Collins. "It is a magical film that eloquently illustrates the Michigan Theater's commitment to excellence in independent filmmaking all year round."
Directed by Michigan native and UM graduate Sultan Sharrief, BILAL’S STAND is about an upright black Muslim teen who works at his family’s taxi stand in Detroit. “The Stand,” as they affectionately call it, has been the family’s social and financial hub for the past 60 years, and Bilal is in line to carry the torch. But Bilal, who burns the midnight oil to keep up both the family business and his grades, develops a secret life designed to enable him to attend the University of Michigan. When his two lives collide, Bilal is forced to decide between keeping The Stand alive - and living the only life he has ever known - or taking a shot at social mobility.
Based on a true story, BILAL’S STAND radiates warmth, humor, and originality. Sultan Sharrief’s debut feature is a freshly crafted film filled with heart and authenticity that transports audiences to a world rarely seen on-screen and heralds the arrival of its filmmaker as a new voice in American independent cinema. For more information on the movie, visit www.bilalsstand.com.
Tickets are priced at $15 for adults, $12 for students, seniors and US veterans, and $10 for Michigan Theater members. Advanced tickets are available at www.ticketweb.com. Group discounts are available for groups of 10 or more. Email dwaller@michtheater.org
The concept behind Sundance Film Festival U.S.A. is to ignite dialogue as people across the country engage in a collective film experience. It is an extension, really, of the work we have done for decades: supporting the independent voice, bringing artists to the table and inserting art more and more into the social context of how we live,” said Robert Redford, Sundance Institute President and Founder of the Sundance Film Festival. “We hope by speaking with artists about their work and experiencing the Festival as it is happening, audiences will be inspired to share opinions, discuss the key issues of our day and reflect on the role art plays in social change.”

“We are so grateful to all Washtenaw County residents who have donated to our Red Kettle Campaign so far, but the need in our community is greater than ever,” said Major John Williams, Washtenaw County coordinator. “Although we helped many families during the holiday season due to the community’s generosity, many more can be helped throughout the year if we reach our overall Red Kettle Campaign goal.”
Those interested in donating to the Red Kettle Campaign can stop by the Ann Arbor Corps at 100 Arbana St. between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, call the Corps at 734-668-8353 or visit www.sawashtenaw.org.

The magazine’s 13th annual SALON TODAY 200 issue profiled the selected salons in its January 2010 issue. The 200 salons were selected for their best business practices from applications submitted by SALON TODAY readers, who represent the 25,000 top-producing salons and spas in the country.
The magazine honored applicants in 11 different best practice categories, including Compensation and Benefits, Recruitment Training, Customer Service, Retention and Reward Programs, Advanced Education, Marketing, Technology, Environmental Sustainability, Retail Programs, Inventory Control and Sales Growth. “Historically, the SALON TODAY 200 focused strictly on sales growth, but this year we recognized that strong business leadership requires the mastery of a number of different best business practices,” said Stacey Soble, editor-in-chief of SALON TODAY. “The salons named to the SALON TODAY 200 for 2010 not only proved they excel in one or more of these areas, they also have created rewarding environments for their staff members and standout experiences for their clients.”

ABOUT THE FILM:
Each year, Jazz at Lincoln Center and its artistic director, Wynton Marsalis, host the prestigious Essentially Ellington Competition and Festival, attracting the absolute best high school jazz bands from across the country. The film follows Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, a public high school in Jacksonville, FL as they prepare and then compete with these elite bands in New York City. Inspired by the entire community of jazz musicians, the students humbly recognize the honor of carrying on the legacy of the masters. Jam-packed with outstanding performances, CHOPS will make you admire the dedication of these teenagers as they proudly deliver the culmination of their hard work: an electrifying festival performance where the students realize that no matter how much one prepares, sometimes life, like jazz, calls for improvisation.
In the program notes for the Maryland Film Festival, its director, Jed Dietz said, “The final moments of the film are as thrilling as anything you’ll see on film this year. Any doubts you might have had about the potential of American youth, the efficacy of arts funding, the practical power of music, are answered for good. And, of course, the music is not to be believed.”
This film has a number of significant connections to the Ann Arbor area. It was produced and directed by Detroit native Bruce Broder, a graduate of Cranbrook School and The University of Michigan. Bruce’s son Owen Broder is one of the central subjects of the film and began his music studies in the Ann Arbor area. The film was made thanks to the cooperation of Jazz at Lincoln Center and its Director of Education, Erika Floreska, also a Detroit native and UM grad. And famed jazz clubs Baker's Keyboard Lounge (Detroit) and The Firefly (Ann Arbor) serve as the settings for the film’s opening sequence.

AATA to Open New Park & Ride Lot
Friday, January 15
Commuters will soon have yet another option for accessing popular Ann Arbor destinations. On January 25, 2010, Ann Arbor Transportation Authority, AATA will begin service to the new Plymouth Road Park & Ride Lot. Located within the US-23/Plymouth Road interchange in Northeast Ann Arbor, the lot is ideally located for commuters using the heavily traveled M-14/US-23 corridor.
Commuters can enter the lot directly from Plymouth Rd. In addition to 260 free, paved parking spaces, the lot features a number of amenities: passenger shelters, lighting, security cameras to provide digital video recording, a signalized entrance/exit, enhanced storm water detention and designated areas for passenger drop-off and carpool/vanpool parking. Bike-and-bus commuters will find a covered parking area for 20 bicycles.
With the opening of the lot, AATA will implement transit service improvements in northeast Ann Arbor. AATA’s Route 2 Plymouth will serve the Plymouth Road Park & Ride lot on weekdays. Buses will operate throughout the day, with trips as frequent as every 10 minutes during peak times.
“We’re delighted to expand transit options – both to Ann Arbor residents and those who commute into town,” said Michael Ford, AATA’s Chief Executive Officer. “This new lot shows our commitment to providing easy, effective, environmentally friendly commuting choices.” The Plymouth Road Park & Ride Lot joins four other facilities as part of AATA’s growing network of Park & Ride lots.
The lot represents AATA’s first independently constructed park and ride facility and is located on the public right of way owned by the Michigan Department of Transportation. The lot was developed in cooperation with Michigan Department of Transportation, City of Ann Arbor and the Federal Highway Administration.
In coordinating the project, AATA involved numerous Michigan-based companies. The primary contractors include D&R Earthmoving of Howell, OHM Engineering of Livonia, Beckett & Raeder of Ann Arbor, Nagle Paving Company of Novi, Rauhorn Electric of Macomb, Goretski Construction Company, Inc. of Milford, Cut-N-Care, Inc. of Wixom, Huron Sign Company of Ypsilanti.
Construction of the lot is funded entirely through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The total estimated cost will be $1.56 million. Substantial completion of the lot allows AATA to open it to the public, as scheduled, on January 25, 2010. This spring final pavement and striping as well as landscaping will complete the project.
A grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Park & Ride lot will take place in May during the annual Commuter Challenge. The Commuter Challenge is a month-long competition during the month of May between Ann Arbor Area organizations that encourages individuals to use sustainable transportation options to get to work.
The Ann Arbor Transportation Authority was chartered in 1969 by the City of Ann Arbor, Michigan, as a special-purpose unit of government. AATA is supported through local, state and federal funds and fare box revenues. AATA operates 27 public transit routes, paratransit services, carpool/vanpool matching services and other transportation services to facilitate mobility throughout the urban areas of Washtenaw County.

Route 2 overview
Route 2: from Downtown map & schedule
Route 2: to Downtown map & schedule
According to Chris White, Manager of Service Development, “The Plymouth route is very busy, with crowded buses on trips during midday and peak commuting hours. The upcoming changes are designed to reduce crowding, improve on-time performance and reallocate service to areas with higher demand.”
Weekday service will now connect to the new Plymouth Road Park & Ride Lot, and additional trips are being added at midday and peak commuting times. Route 2X has been renumbered as route 2C and integrated into the route 2 schedule. Wednesday, January 13
ZingTrain, the training and consulting company in the Zingerman’s Community of Businesses, announces a new Service Express workshop designed to help area businesses master the day-to-day challenge of providing excellent customer service. The inaugural workshop will be held Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010, from 8:00am until noon in ZingTrain’s training facility on Plaza Drive, near Zingerman’s Bakehouse and the Ann Arbor airport. The cost per person is $295, which includes a light breakfast and all course materials.
Having taught Zingerman’s customer service approach for many years to clients around the country, Zingtrain has developed the Express workshop to bring Zingerman’s key lessons for effective customer service to local businesses in an affordable, 4-hour session. “We’ve been teaching customized workshops to businesses for years and have received numerous requests from the local business community to offer a workshop like this as part of our regular schedule,” notes ZingTrain founder Maggie Bayless. “We hope to provide the core skills to businesses that either need a refresher from their experience in our two-day seminar or who don’t have the means to attend the full session but want to get a jump start on great service.”
Nationally recognized for the service and the service training they provide, Zingerman’s has been touted by Saveur magazine which wrote “when it comes to service, few establishments rival Zingerman’s.” Ari Weinzweig, Zingerman’s co-founder, explains that Zingerman’s approach to service is different from that of other businesses “because we decided, after much trial and error, to write down, in the form of recipes, what we think good service is. Once we documented it, it was easier to tinker with and refine and, more importantly, teach to our staff. Teaching it to other businesses was a logical next step.” Like the two-day Art of Giving Great Service seminar that inspired it, the Service Express workshop is interactive and provides many opportunities for discussion and hands-on practice following the Zingerman’s service recipes.

3-Time Tony Award-Winner Avenue Q Coming to the Michigan Theater for One Night Only
Wednesday, January 13
Theatre Council Productions of Chicago is proud to present the smash-hit Broadway musical AVENUE Q in its Ann Arbor debut for one night only, Monday, April 5 at 7:30 pm at the Michigan Theater.
Winner of three Tony Awards, AVENUE Q is about real life in New York City, as told by a cast of people and puppets through a hilariously irreverent book and score.
AVENUE Q tells the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who moves to NYC with big dreams and a tiny bank account. The only apartment he can afford is way out on Avenue Q, where everyone's looking for the same things he is: a decent job, a stable relationship, and a "purpose." Eventually, Princeton learns to embrace the ups and downs of city life and realizes that "the real world" isn't so bad, after all!
The New York Times hailed AVENUE Q as "a breakthrough musical of a very different stripe. Savvy, sassy and delicious!" and Entertainment Weekly claimed it was "one of the funniest shows you're ever likely to see!"
Due to adult situations (like full-puppet nudity), AVENUE Q may be inappropriate for kids under 13.
Reserved seats are $25-$65 and go on sale Friday, January 15 at ticketmaster.com and all Ticketmaster outlets, including the Michigan Union Ticket Office and Macy’s stores. Charge tickets by phone at 800-745-3000.
About Avenue Q
AVENUE Q features music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, book by Jeff Whitty, based on an original concept by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx; and is directed by Jason Moore; puppet design by Rick Lyon, orchestrations by Stephen Oremus, choreography by Ken Roberson, scenic design by Anna Louizos, costume design by Mirena Rada, lighting design by Howell Binkley, and sound design by Lew Mead; associate director is Evan Ensign and music supervisor is Andrew Graham.

Wolverine Brewing Finds an Ann Arbor Home
Tuesday, February 12
Wolverine Brewing signed a lease for 6000 square feet of the former Big George's warehouse at 2019 W. Stadium where they will open a micro brewery and tasting room later this year.
Founders Matt Roy and Trevor Thrall have realized the next step of their dream to brew and sell alongside the other renowned Michigan based beer companies. The company has been brewing WOLVERINE BEER, available throughout Ann Arbor and much of the state, for three years on a contract basis but starting in the spring of 2010 will have full control of production, quality and distribution from their West side Ann Arbor location.
Marketing and Sales Director E.T. Crowe, who joined the company as part owner in 2009 has expanded the distribution network out to Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids and up the West Michigan coastline to Traverse City. But by opening a tasting room (or "tap room") in Ann Arbor, the community will soon be able to enjoy their premium lagers in a welcoming, "everybody knows your name" type setting on the west side of town. Their local distribution partner, Arbor Beverage, will work even closer with the company to assure that more local bars, restaurants and retail stores carry the Michigan made premium lager. Once the brewery opens, brew master Oliver Roberts will begin adding more diverse and creative brews, using well established brewing principles and a true home brewer's natural curiosity to develop the next generation of bottled and draft products for Wolverine Brewing.

Real Estate Investment Firm Profits in Economic Downturn
Tuesday, January 12
Promanas, an investment company formed by local veteran real estate professionals, is generating returns for investors at levels that other popular investment vehicles aren’t reaching. By the end of 2009, Promanas will have acquired over $14 million worth of commercial properties and plans to exceed that number in 2010. All acquisitions meet specific criteria designed to minimize investor risk and maximize immediate and long-term returns. Three of the four recent acquisitions are in Michigan.
John Bogdasarian, president of Promanas, explains, “About one in one hundred properties for sale make our short list. We are very selective about the location, the viability of the current tenants in the buildings, the structure of the leases, and the terms of the financing.”
Promanas’ accredited investors benefit from cash flow distributions, principal pay down, and potential appreciation of the properties. “The recent Ponzi schemes have made people very cautious about investing,” says Bogdasarian. “We operate with 100% transparency and are careful to identify the potential risks of any investment. We have our own equity in each transaction we put together, so our interests are aligned with our investors.”
Bogdasarian started in residential real estate in 1996 and a few years later shifted focus to commercial transactions obtaining a CCIM designation in 1999. He currently has ownership in multiple entities that hold over 30 single family homes, 500 apartment units, 400,000 square feet of office space, and over 1 million square feet of industrial/warehouse/distribution space.
He periodically gives seminars explaining the basics of investing in single-family homes, apartment complexes, and commercial deals through a licensed broker. His next seminar in January 27, 2009. For more information, go to www.promanas.com or call 734-477-9400.
Festival Plans to Do More with Less
Tuesday, January 12
The Ann Arbor Summer Festival announces changes for 2010 that will build on its success, while making operational adjustments to improve its financial stability. These efforts will include: extended weekend hours at Top of the Park, while going dark on Monday nights; fewer Mainstage performances; an inaugural cabaret fundraiser in February; and a special online promotion that lets the community vote for the outdoor movies that will be screened at this year’s festival.
"We definitely plan to do more with less,” said festival director Robb Woulfe. “We're being more creative about partnerships, and looking for new ways to engage the community in the experience. To ensure sustainability, we continue to explore ways to increase revenue and reduce expense, while also promoting greater ownership and broad-based participation from the community.”
Maximizing revenue and leveraging new opportunities will be critical as the festival moves forward, particularly as it tries to replace the steady decline of corporate and foundation support. Last year alone, the festival suffered close to a six-figure decrease in sponsorship dollars. Having just completed a successful year-end challenge campaign that hit its goal of $50,000, as well as being awarded a recent grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the festival is being creative, yet fiscally conservative.
Some of the Ann Arbor Summer Festival’s changes and new initiatives for 2010 include:
Extended Weekend Hours and Dark Mondays
Based on last year’s successful introduction of earlier start times on select evenings at Top of the Park, the festival will continue to expand its hours of weekend operation with Friday, Saturday, and Sunday now opening at 5:00 p.m. The shift will allow the festival to focus more of its resources on high-traffic nights, providing additional time to program more artists, more activities, and more weekend attractions. This will also offer after work groups and families an incentive to have dinner at Top of the Park. The festival will go dark on Mondays, based, unsurprisingly, on the trend of low attendance and slow business activity on that evening. “Being closed one night each week will provide a breather for patrons, vendors, and staff to re-energize for that coming week’s activities,” said Woulfe. “For those dedicated festival-goers looking for Monday night entertainment, I encourage them to enjoy a performance or movie at one of the other great venues around town.”
Smaller Mainstage Season
As attendance and revenues increase at Top of the Park, the festival recognizes the economic climate will not support as many ticketed shows as have been presented in the past. “As our outdoor programs grow in popularity, we don’t want to split the community or our audience, but rather try to expand it,” said Woulfe. “Although the festival will present fewer Mainstage performances this year, we promise not to compromise on quality or depth of programming. We will continue to offer indoor shows that address our most popular audience interests, while utilizing a wider range of appropriate venues and partners for each program.” For 2010, the festival plans to again present its Mainstage performances at
Power Center, Hill Auditorium, and the University of Michigan Museum of Art, while also looking to introduce new and alternative spaces into the assortment of festival venues.
New Winter Fundraiser: Big TOP Revue
As part of its new program launches for 2010, the festival is excited to introduce the first annual Big TOP Revue, a night of cabaret and cuisine to benefit Top of the Park. Hosted on February 16 (Mardi Gras Day) by Gratzi and La Dolce Vita in downtown Ann Arbor, the fundraiser promises to offer a saucy blend of cabaret, circus and burlesque, all choreographed around a sumptuous three-course meal followed by an underground after-party. The event begins at 6:00 p.m. with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, followed by a seated dinner paired with fine wines and cabaret entertainment at 7:00 p.m., and concludes with a late-night after-party show that starts at 9:00 p.m. The Big TOP Revue is a re-interpretation of the festival’s previous Chefs fundraiser, keeping a similar gourmet dining experience, but freshening it up with some great entertainment. Tickets per person are $150 all-inclusive, or $35 for the after-party only, with a portion being tax deductible. For reservations or more information, please visit annarborsummerfestival.org.
Pick-a-Flick
Will it be Grease or West Side Story? How about Kung Fu Panda or Harry Potter? Now through March 1, the festival is asking the community to choose the movies that will be screened at Top of the Park this summer. Participants can vote for their favorites films, as well as write one in for the Wild Card choice, through a survey on the festival’s website at annarborsummerfestival.org. The ballot includes titles ranging from classics and cult favorites to more recent blockbusters. Participants can vote as many times as they wish, with the winning line-up being revealed in the spring when the full Top of the Park schedule is announced.
The Ann Arbor Summer Festival’s mission is to present a world-class celebration of arts and entertainment that enriches the cultural, economic, and social vitality of the region. Started in 1983, the festival attracts more than 60,000 people each year from the local community and throughout Southeast Michigan. Preparing to celebrate its 27th season, this year’s festival runs from June 18 through July 11, 2010. The new season details will be announced starting in March. For more information, please visit annarborsummerfestival.org.
